GOGC finalizes construction of Gardabani TPP-2
24 December, 2019
Gardabani TPP-2 is already supplying electricity to the unified energy system of Georgia in the experimental commissioning and comprehensive testing mode. Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation invested up to $ 180 mln. in construction of 230 MW combined cycle, modern thermal power plant equipped with the newest technologies. It construction phase continued from February 2018 till December 2019 and will generate electricity will full capacity by 2020 winter season.
It’s the first time in Georgia when the new TPP is equipped with the so-called
black-start function which implies supply of electricity in the network first and restoration of the entire system from zero during emergency situation in the energy system of the country.
The new energy-efficient combined cycle TPP consumes about twice less volume of gas and will be more cost-effective than old power units operating with natural gas in Georgia.
Gardabani TPP is equipped with modern type gas and steam turbines and generators produced by "General Electric" (GE-Power). This company is a leader in production of this type of units all over the world and is distinguished for high standard of energy efficiency and quality.
According to Mr. George Bakhtadze, General Director of GOGC, "the project has the greatest strategic importance for independence of the Georgian energy system, for strengthening the energy security of the country and irreversible development of the energy sector in general".
Construction works of 230 MW combined cycle TPP were performed by contractor company of "Gardabani TPP-2" LLC - China Tianchen Engineering Corporation (TCC), which is one of the largest engineering-industrial corporations in the city of Tianjin, People’s Republic of China. At this stage, the annual income of the company exceeds one billion USD and it is engaged in international engineering projects ongoing in more than 30 countries.
