Feasibility Study for the First Underground Gas Storage Project in Georgia Completed
15 April, 2016
Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Kakha Kaladze and General Director of Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) David Tvalabeishvili presented the results of the feasibility study for the Underground Gas Storage Project on Samgori South Dome field.
The report was prepared by a French company “GEOSTOCK”, selected through an international tender. Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) concluded the contract with the company in June, 2015.
Construction of the underground gas storage facility is significant for our country as it will enhance energy security of Georgia. If the gas supply is temporarily disrupted, underground gas storage facility will provide household as well as other consumers with natural gas, said David Tvalabeishvili.
It will be one of the most significant strategic facilities in the country, as it will ensure the uninterrupted supply of natural gas to the country, said Minister of Enenrgy Kakha kaladze.

“Georgia is the only country that does not have a gas storage facility, which is a significant problem in case of an unplanned termination of gas, as well as the seasonal imbalance between natural gas supply and consumption.
In order to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to household consumers and energy sector, Government of Georgia and GOGC took a decision to construct the underground gas storage on the Samgori South Dome oil field. By constructing the gas storage, Georgia will obtain a strategically important facility which will significantly increase energy security of the country by reducing seasonal differences between natural gas supply and demand on the Georgian gas market, supplying additional gas to the pipeline network during peak consumptions, and ensuring gas delivery to customers in critical situations when gas supply is disrupted from the importing countries.
The feasibility study report confirms the possibility of the construction of the underground gas storage on the Samgori South Dome oil field. It underlines strategic significance and commercial feasibility of the project. The report also focuses on the possibilities for optimizing technical and economical parameters and includes recommendations for conducting additional studies right before starting the construction stage.
After the completion of the underground gas storage project the facility will be capable to store 210-280 million cubic meters of gas, which amounts to around 10-15% of the current total annual consumption.
